Kites, Kumkum, and Kavayat: A Sky-High Makar Sankranti Celebration at Marathi Shala
On a day when the sky was not just a canvas but a playground, Marathi Shala's session transformed into a vibrant celebration of Makar Sankranti, complete with Haldi Kumkum, a potluck that could competing any food festival, and, of course, the high-flying adventure of kite flying. It was a day that proved learning can indeed soar beyond the pages and into the skies. The day was filled with traditional activities, educational sessions, and the sheer joy of kite flying, making it a memorable experience for everyone involved.
The Warm-Up That Warmed Hearts
Our day kicked off with Batch 1's energetic Kavayat, a warm-up that not only combated the morning chill but also set the stage for a day filled with laughter and learning. The session saw a melodious rendition of the "Gurubrahma Guru Vishnu" Sloka, a new challenge that our scholars met with enthusiastic (if not entirely harmonious) voices. The sight of children presenting their handmade kites was a testament to creativity and perhaps a gentle reminder of why parents should probably stick to their day jobs.
The academic session included a recap of Swar and Vyanjane, followed by a fun homework review where Amita teacher appreciated the kites made by students and discussed fun facts about Makar Sankranti. New Vyanjane (ट [t] and ठ [th]) were introduced, enriching the students' linguistic skills. The story of Makar Sankranti, illustrated with pictures, concluded the class, leaving the children enlightened and entertained.
The session for Batch 2 started at 11:10 am with Manache Sloks, followed by an insightful discussion on the significance of Makar Sankranti. The recap of Swar and Vyanjane added new words to the students' vocabulary. The session was interactive, with homework checks and the introduction of three new Vyanjane (ण [n], त [t], थ [tha]). A game of Talyat and Malyat (water and mud) brought a playful end to the academic session.
Learning, Laughter, and Linguistic Leaps
As we dived into the academic session, it was clear that the spirit of Makar Sankranti was lifting everyone's spirits—and not just the kites. Amita teacher's homework review turned into a showcase of flowing wonders and fun facts about Makar Sankranti that had everyone buzzing with new knowledge and a bit of kite envy.
The formal Makar Sankranti celebration commenced at 12:30 PM, with Shantanoo Kirtane providing a brief on the scientific reasoning behind the festival and its various names. This was followed by a potluck where families shared delicious meals, and then the children and fathers headed to Wickund Park for an afternoon of kite flying.
Meanwhile, the mothers celebrated with Haldi Kumkum and Bornan, exchanging Van/gift and enjoying games with gifts sponsored by our supporter, Anu Pelia Ji. Kashmira Patkar emerged as the winner of the games, showcasing camaraderie and festive spirit among the ladies. See the video.
Skyward Dreams and Grounded Traditions
The celebration took to the skies in the literal sense during our kite flying session at Wickund Park. With every kite that kissed the sky, there was laughter, cheers, and a few tangled strings—reminding us all that what goes up must come down, preferably not in a tree. The sight of our kites, Graagi and Akshat, reaching for the clouds was a beautiful metaphor for our community's aspirations and collective spirit.
Kite flying high
Back on solid ground, the mothers' Haldi Kumkum and Bornan celebration was a vibrant affair, with games that sparked both competition and camaraderie. Kashmira Patkar's victory was a highlight, proving that when it comes to festive games, strategy can sometimes be as effective as a strong gust of wind.

A Celebration to Remember
As we wrapped up the day's festivities, it was clear that this Makar Sankranti was about more than just marking a festival on the calendar. It was a celebration of our culture, our community, and the joy of coming together to create memories that, much like our kites, will linger high in the sky of our hearts for a long time to come.
Thank you to everyone who joined in the fun, laughter, and occasional kite rescue mission. Here's to many more celebrations where our spirits—and kites—can soar together.
