A Day of Learning and Fun at MH Marathi Shala

A Day of Learning and Fun at MH Marathi Shala

Embracing Language on a Cold Winter Morning

Date: 1/14/2024

Yesterday's MH Marathi Shala class was a testament to the joy and dedication that language learning can bring, even on a chilly winter morning. Our Batch 1 class commenced at 10:10 AM, filled with the enthusiasm of our young scholars ready to dive into the depths of the Marathi language.

Warming Up with Kavayat

The day began with a warm-up activity led by our teacher, Amita Ji. The Kavayat session was not just a physical warm-up but also a way to awaken the minds of our little scholars from their sleepy state. The energy in the room was palpable as the children prepared for a day of learning. Picture 1, show Kavayat.

Innovative Learning with Swar and Vyanjane

We revisited all the Marathi Swar (vowels) and the first four Vyanjane (consonants: เค• [k], เค– [kh], เค— [g], เค˜ [gh]). Our innovative approach, spearheaded by teacher Sucheta Ji, involved asking each student to come up with a new word, different from the ones they had learned. This method proved to be highly effective, as it not only reinforced their learning but also expanded their vocabulary. For instance, when asked what 'mirror' is called in Marathi, the kids eagerly recalled the words from their memory, adding several new words to their lexicon.

We then introduced two more Vyanjane: เคš [ch] and เค› [chh]. The session included reading and writing practice of these letters, and the children were assigned to learn two new words related to these Vyanjane as homework. Moving forward, our teachers will be checking this homework to ensure consistent learning.

Batch 2: On-Time Start and Engaging Recap

The Batch 2 class began promptly at 11:10 AM PST. We started with a recap of all Swar and Vyanjane, including เค• [k], เค– [kh], เค— [g], เค˜ [gh], เคš [ch], เค› [chh], เคœ [j], and เค [jh]. The class then learned เคŸ [t] and เค  [th], with a focus on practicing these as homework.

A significant portion of the session was dedicated to recapping Swar and Vyanjane. We engaged the scholars in a game that involved coming up with new words for each Swar and the first seven Vyanjane. This activity was not only fun but also immensely beneficial in reinforcing their understanding and encouraging them to think creatively.

Tracking Progress and Participation

An important announcement was made regarding the tracking of scholars' attendance and homework. This initiative is aimed at encouraging regular participation and ensuring that our scholars are keeping up with their language learning journey. It's a step towards making our classes more structured and beneficial for every student.

As we wrapped up the classes, it was evident that our approach to teaching - blending traditional methods with innovative techniques - is fostering a deep love for the Marathi language among our young learners. The enthusiasm and progress displayed by our scholars are a source of great pride and motivation for us.

We look forward to continuing this journey of language and cultural education at MH Marathi Shala, where every class is an opportunity to learn, grow, and have fun.

Stay tuned for more updates and highlights from our classes, where the Marathi language comes alive in the most beautiful ways.
